Why Your Target Audience Is More Important Than Your Spouse

Ok, maybe your target audience isn’t actually more important than your spouse, but a close second. You should know them inside out and love the bones of them. Why? Because knowing who they are and who they aren’t, could make or break your bloggy business.

How to find your target market was something that I did not understand until it was far too late and I was struggling to find a product idea that would be profitable for my Craft Blog. Back in 2010 when I started Heart Handmade UK, it was perfectly acceptable to say “my audience is all women in their 20’s who like crafting and home decor.” Sadly. That’s just not enough.

Learn How To Brand Yourself in 5 Simple Steps

Assuming you use Pinterest as much as I do, you’ve probably seen the word “branding” pop up here and there. But what is branding, how do you create a brand, and how do you brand yourself? Branding is the personality of your business.
Think about your best friend and your boss. Unless your best friend is your boss, you probably speak and interact with these people differently. You may goof off with your best friend and can act out. But with your Boss, you act more professional. So let’s compare this with your brand.
Your brand has to do with how you interact with your customers and how they perceive you. Your boss sees you as a hard working professional, while your friend sees you as crazy and a fun friend. Are you starting to get it? You get to choose how people view and interact with your brand. Will individuals who see your brand see a business with a professional tone, a caring tone, or a fun and colourful tone?

20 Mistakes You Could Be Making When You’re Setting Goals

20 Mistakes You Could Be Making When You’re Setting Goals

The title of this post promises so much doesn’t it? Well, guess what, it’s all possible. I’m here to help with goal setting.

(Does anyone else finish “if you can dream it” with a rather famous R Kelly song? I did. That shows how cultured I am. I’m all about Space Jam)
 break
Do not be afraid to dream big!
 break
I’m a dreamer, always have been and always will be.
 break
I am constantly thinking of ideas and I have notebooks full of craft project ideas and blog posts.
 break
How do I figure out which ones to pursue?
 break
I ask why.
 break
Why am I doing this and how does it get me closer to my end goal?
 break
Of course, I don’t always do things because they’re moving me towards a specific goal.

“Look for the answer inside your question” – Rumi

 break

Let’s begin with the goal setting mistakes you could be making:

 break

1. You don’t ask why you’re setting a goal

 break
Meditating, journaling and yoga make me happy. They’re good for my mental health, which in turn is good to keep me on track to achieve goals in other areas of my life.
 break
When you set a goal, think about the end goal and why you want to achieve it.
 break

2. You don’t set goals That Excite Or Motivate you

 break
If your goal is to go to the Bahamas, but it means you have to work longer hours in a crappy job, what should you do?
 break
Get a stunning picture of the Bahamas and set it as wallpaper on all your electronics.
 break
Print out a stock photo of the Bahamas.
 break
What do you need to get to the Bahamas?
 break

Answer: More money.

 break
How do you get more money?
 break
Is your goal to quit that crapola job and work from home?
 break
Take some time to meditate or at least relax and visualise how you want your future to look.
 break
Do you want to have a fantastic home office?
 break
Space where you are constantly motivated and happy to be in?
 break
Find some amazing craft rooms and post them up on your walls to remind you, that is where you want to be.
 break
Remember that you are 100% more likely to achieve your goal if you are really excited about the outcome. (Full disclosure, I completely made that percentage up. But I believe it! Is that enough?!)

3. You don’t break your goals down into actionable steps (short term goals)

 break
If you apply a timeframe to your action steps, then you’re flying sunshine!
 break
The more detailed your actionable steps are, the more likely you are to be successful.
 break
Not setting actionable steps means that you are simply going to fail.
 break
Set actionable steps/short term goals that will help you reach your big goal.
 break

4. You don’t accept that failure is possible

 break
The truth is, if you don’t set the steps above and accept that you might fail, you are going to be so disappointed.
 break
For example; people who think that new years resolutions don’t work.
 break
The reason they don’t work is that people treat it as a wish list more than a “goals they will actually achieve” list.
 break
You may have guessed by now, but I’m a #goalgetter.
 break
I set goals every quarter.
 break
Then I review said goals at the end of every quarter.
 break
Reassess and adjust my goals accordingly.
 break

5. Don’t set a time frame to complete their goals.

 break
If your goal is to start a blog and start earning money within three months, that gives you 12 weeks to plan.
 break
Download your free blog planner right here or sign up and start your blog in seven days! Or… Three weeks.
 break
It is entirely possible to do that.
 break
I did it with this very blog.
 break
It was my goal in January to start this blog, fill it with content and launch it before the end of the first quarter.
 break
Done.
 break
Now it’s time to set goals for the next quarter that will be reviewed at the end of the four months.
 break

6. You don’t write your goals down.

 break
It baffles me how people expect to achieve anything when it isn’t written down and visible.
 break
If something isn’t in front of me and I’m not reminded of it, I forget all about it.
 break
Sometimes my home office is more like a scene from Memento, but that’s because I struggle with memory problems due to chronic medical conditions (you can read all about them right here).
 break
Despite my memory problems, my medical conditions and my disability I am still crushing goals.
 break
So why the fudge aren’t you?
 break
If I can do it, you certainly can.
 break

7. You Make Too Many Goals

 break
Have you ever written a list of goals you’d love to achieve and it ends up looking like a grocery list?
 break
I’ve done that.
 break
And instantly felt overwhelmed.
 break
At that stage, I wouldn’t be surprised if you abandoned your list altogether.
 break
But it’s okay, it’s just a starting off point.
 break

8. You don’t prioritise your goals

break
At the grocery list stage, you want to determine which of your goals are most important.
break
To do this, you need to go back to step one and ask why.
break
Why are you setting your goal?
break
What is your overall goal?
break
Is it to make more money?
break
Then your first goal should be to do whatever will make you the most money immediately. And organise from there.
break
I find that at this stage, it is best to make a priorities matrix.
break
I use a huge poster board like this, and these multicoloured neon post-its,washi tape and a sharpie.
break

9. You haven’t figured out how to measure your goal

break
What does success mean in relation to the goal you want to set?
break
Is your goal to have a blog, with content, ready to launch?
break
Is it having your first 1k in blog traffic?
break
You need to figure out what will equal success.

18 Time management tips to make you insanely productive

18 Time management tips to make you insanely productive

It’s fashionable to multitask nowadays; it’s what I was taught was the status quo. Unfortunately, multi-tasking is much like doing lots of things badly. Increasing my productivity was top of my list when I decided that I wanted to monetise my blog. It was time to impart these time management tips to you.

My medical conditions mean that I don’t have a lot of energy so the time I do have, is precious.

I know that is the same story for Mum bloggers too.

The people who tend to multitask subscribe to the idea that “staying busy” means you’re working hard but being busy isn’t necessarily working hard.

You want to work smarter and not harder.

This is especially true for you if your time is precious.

I’ve known for a long time that multi-tasking does not work. You tend to achieve very little and what you do achieve, tends to happen very slowly.

Working Smarter, Not Harder

It’s an oldie but a goodie.

When there is something that I need to achieve, I write it on a post-it note and put it on my productivity matrix**.

Seeing the task on a post-it note helps me to determine whether or not it’s an urgent task, what the ROI will be if I should delegate the task or schedule it for further down the time.

Managing my time isn’t about squeezing as many tasks into my spare time as possible. Otherwise, I would get nothing done.

It’s about simplifying how I work, doing things more efficiently, and relieving any potential stress.

I compiled this list of tips to help you become an efficient blogger

There are a plethora of books and tips for you to organise your world so that you can be made more effective in work and life but these tips are things that help me personally.

Read through the tips and figure out which may be very helpful for you to do and try them out.

On A Daily Basis, I might have a list of 10 things on a To Do list, but I aim to achieve 3.

If I don’t achieve any more than 3, I don’t beat myself up about it.

There are enough hours in a day for everything you’d like to do; you just need to figure out your most important tasks first.

How do I improve concentration and increase my productivity?

1. Complete most important task first.

Considered a golden rule of time management.

Also known as ‘Eating That Frog’ by the King of productivity – Brian Tracy.

Eat That Frog! is all about overcoming procrastination and learning to manage your time.

It’s perfectly normal to feel drowned in work, but when you learn to “eat your frogs” – meaning do your most important tasks first – you’ll work more efficiently and be happier too.

2. Forgive Yourself

My husband was always creating To Do lists of things he wanted to achieve; sometimes there were about twenty items on the list, and if he didn’t achieve them all in one day he would become furious.

I watched him becoming angry one day, and I was scowling as he ranted.

“Wha?!”

“How long would it take you to do each of the tasks on that list and do them properly?”

The answer was… longer than 24 hours if you plug in eating, showering and sleeping.

This was when I taught him the all important lesson of aiming for 3 of those things and forgiving yourself when you don’t do more than 3.

He became much more efficient with his time and to do lists after that and a lot kinder to himself.

3. Get A Good Nights Sleep

Because of my medical conditions, if I don’t get a deep sleep and wake up naturally, I become completely useless and have to write the day of completely.

If I write on a day like that, nine times out of ten, I have to rewrite on another day.

On those days I do tasks that require very little brain power and just give into it in the hope that the next day will be much more productive.

The number of times I read about people staying up to 3 am to work on a post or a product.. it baffles me.

Arianna Huffington has tried her best to wake people up to the power of sleep in her series of books.

When you are well rested, you become much more efficient and productive in your output.

I cannot emphasise enough, how much you need a good nights sleep.

4. Learn To Say No.

When I was diagnosed with my condition, it was obvious from the beginning that my energy levels were little to non-existent.

I didn’t have a choice about whether or not I said ‘no’ to things.

Physically, if I did something, I would become so exhausted my body would shut down completely.

Saying ‘no’ is one of my favourite things to do.

I don’t mind being selfish because when I’m looking after myself, I’m investing in my future and the future of my family.

Regarding productivity, saying no to things that will just waste your time can give YOU more time to work on the things that you want to work on!

5. Eliminate distractions

There are a lot of things in our lives that make us insanely unproductive and can distract easily.

1. To write without being distracted, I start with a clean desk.
2. Turn off notifications
3. Close your email provider (infant, try checking your email once or twice a day, you will be amazed how much more productive you become)
4. Set your daily priorities in the morning, or better yet, at the end of your day for the next morning.
5. Try to make your computer a distraction-free place; empty the bin, organise your folders and install an extension to ensure you are only able to open about five tabs at a time. For Chrome, you can install XTab https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/xtab/amddgdnlkmohapieeekfknakgdnpbleb?hl=en
6. Use Pomello and Trello or a regular timer set to 25 minutes.
7. Listen to binaural beats (check Spotify or youtube) and listen using headphones
8. Close the door
9. Make sure you have plenty of water to stay hydrated
10. Get up every 25 minutes and stretch your legs

How to become insanely productive with these tips that are proven to work.
